Can you really say you’re going “hiking” in Dallas? Maybe not, but there are some hidden gems that
make for good escapes into nature!
Here is my favorite location in DFW with trails that feel like little getaways into the great outdoors:
AT&T Trail and Trinity Forest Trail at the Trinity River Audubon Center
Not far south from downtown Dallas, you’ll notice it starts to get greener. You’re entering the Great
Trinity Forest, which is actually “the largest urban hardwood forest” in the U.S. Tucked away in this
forest is the Audubon Center, a nature preserve with several short trails surrounded by ponds and
grasslands.
However my favorite trails are actually outside of the preserve: the AT&T and Trinity Forest trails. Both
are wide and paved, easy for bike riding or walking with friends, but it won’t take long to feel like you’re
in the middle of nature.
Here is a little about each trail:
AT&T Trail:
The AT&T Trails: Facing the Audubon Center the AT&T Trail is on the right. It starts by The Trinity Forest
golf course, but soon after takes you through the forest for miles.
Trail Length: 3.5 miles one way
Why I Like It: This is definitely a trail for those wanting to “get away,” as you may not see any other
people on it. It’s great for when you want to clear your head, and the trees provide shade from the
Texas sun. It’s one of the few places in Dallas where you can actually feel like you’re in a forest.

Trinity Forest Trail:
The Trinity Forest trail on the left is (slightly) more social. This trail will take you alongside the Audubon
Center’s wetlands, across and along the Trinity River, and to the Lemmon Lakes. There are a couple of
legs to this trail, so it’s easy to “choose your own adventure.”
Trail Length: Approximately 4.5 miles one way (if you continue to the lakes)
Why I Like It: With wetlands and a river alongside you, you’ll feel like you’re not in Dallas anymore.
This is a great way to see birds and other animals (watch out for snakes!) as well. This also takes you
through a forest if you continue toward the Joppa Preserve and the lakes, so you’ll get a good mix of
scenery.
It’s hard to feel like you’re in nature in DFW, which makes the Trinity Forest that much more special.
When you need a break from the city, I recommend checking this area out.
